Make Google Music Manager work in F15

To get the Google Music manager to work on Fedora 15

  1. Follow the instruction here.

  2. Run this as root:
    ln -s /etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt

  3. Start the 'Google Music Manager' from the 'Sound & Video' menu

  4. Logon in with your google account and select what folder to sync.

If you don't do step 2, then your will get a 'Can't connect to service"

It look like ít need your network card to named ethX, else you will get a "Could not identify your computer" error.  This is fixed by adding "biosdevname=0" to grub.conf. (Bad coding Google, please fix).

logon/logoff to load the plugin (or restart the gnome shell with Alt-F2 and type 'r' + Enter)

Double click on a blank part of the gnome-shell top bar to turn auto hide on/off.

gnome-shell themes (part2)

I have extended the theme selector by F. P. Murphy to show more themes in the overview and to show system wide themes.

Download the rpm here

Install it with (as root)
yum install gnome-shell-extensions-theme-selector-0.9-2.fc15.noarch.rpm

the package no longer contains any themes, but i have made separate rpm packages for many great themes made by half-left.

The theme rpm's can also be used with the latest version of gnome-tweak-tool (3.0.4) (Not in fedora yet, but i have an rpm here)

the theme-selector extension cant reset to the default theme, this can be dome by running
gsettings reset org.gnome.shell.extensions.user-theme name

here are review requests for getting the packages into fedora.

Feel free to review the packages :)

Playing with Gnome shell themes

A while ago stumbled over a blog with a lot of info about gnome-shell extensions.

Frank Murphy has made an theme selector extension to easy preview and select some great gnome-shell themes done by half-Left

After some testing of this great extension I have some packages for Fedora 15 to make it easier to install and test.

You just have to do this (as root):
yum install http://timlau.fedorapeople.org/files/packages/theme-selector/gnome-shell-extensions-theme-selector-0.9-1.fc15.noarch.rpm --nogpg

then run (as your normal user):
theme-selector-setup

there will link the included themes into ~/.themes.
Then you need to press ALT-F2 and type r to restart the gnome-shell and you are up and running.

Now you can activate the Overview an select the Themes button to show the theme-selector page and start to select new themes.

Gnome 3 tweeks

Gnome 3 got a lot of beating lately because of the we know what is best for you attitude.

But even if there is no gui to help the customization, here are some hints.

Get the Blue fedora icons back:

yum install fedora-icon-theme (as root)
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme Fedora

Get the windows buttons back

gconftool-2 -s -t string /desktop/gnome/shell/windows/button_layout "menu:minimize,maximize,close"

gsettings list-keys org.gnome.desktop.interface

Will list other options to play with, like font-name there is setting the default font & size

xfce 4.8 can be sexy too

Yesterday was xfce 4.8 test day, so i decided to give it a try. just did a 'yum install @xfce' at my F15 Alpha TC2 based install. It work very well and was much more stable than gnome3 there is a little buggy at the moment.

gdm dont support starting anything else gmone3 at the moment (Hope they fix that soon) so i had to boot in runlevel 3 and use startxfce4 to get it running.

The default interface is not the most sexy looking in the world, but with a little tweaking it go beaten into shape.

I have done the following:

Enable composition  in the widow manager setup.

Added shadows and make windows borders transparent.

Removed the bottom panel and installed docky.  (yum install docky)

Got a new theme from here. (put it into ~/.themes)

Remove some stuff from the top bar and remove the frame around the notification area. (you can use expanded blank separator to center the clock widget and put the notification to the right)

Gnome3 power setting

There have been written a lot about the missing GUI option to set the default lid close action in Gnome3 and I am one of those users there have a laptop where suspend will going into doom (actually is not suspend there is the problem but resume :) ). This is not a a gnome3 issue but my issue, because I close the lid many time a day when the laptop is doing some work and I do something else.

The sad part is that Fedora will be one of the first distributions to use gnome3 as default and it will take the beating for choices made upstream.

What there not have been written a lot about, is how to change the lid default action, so here  it comes

Setting Laptop lid close action on ac:

gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_ac "<setting>"

<setting> ::= nothing|blank|suspend|hibernate|shutdown

Setting Laptop lid close action on battery:

gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_battery "<setting>"

<setting> ::= nothing|blank|suspend|hibernate|shutdown

Edit:

In Fedora 15 alpha you have to use

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action "<setting>"

and

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action "<setting>"

Update:

Here is a shell script to easy change the settings, just run an select from the gui. It was kindly contributed by Kevin DeKorte

Issue with installing kernel using yumex-2.9.x in Fedora 12

There is a selinux issues in Yum Extender 2.9.x in Fedora 12 (Beta) and F11.

It will give problems when installing new kernels

you will get messages like this

13:33:46 : YUM: /sbin/new-kernel-pkg: line 292: /sbin/depmod: Permission denied
13:34:05 : YUM: /usr/bin/ldd: line 118: /sbin/udevd: Permission denied

It is caused by /usr/share/yumex/yumex-yum-backend is not labeled correctly.

Run the following commands as root to fix it.

chcon system_u:object_r:rpm_exec_t:s0 /usr/share/yumex/yumex-yum-backend
restorecon -r /usr/share/yumex

I have requested it to be added to standard SELinux policy in Fedora.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=527528

To fix an already installed kernel in F12.

$ rpm -q kernel-PAE --scripts | grep -e '--install'
/sbin/new-kernel-pkg --package kernel-PAE --mkinitrd --dracut --depmod .......

copy the /sbin/new-kernel-pkg command and run it as root.

/sbin/new-kernel-pkg --package kernel-PAE --mkinitrd --dracut --depmod .......

if you are using a non PAE system then substitute 'kernel-PAE' with 'kernel' in the rpm -q command.
